MSci Nursing (Child & Learning Disabilities)
About this course
Dual field nursing is an intensive and distinctive qualification that prepares you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in two separate fields of practice simultaneously. This four-year full-time programme at Edge Hill University leads to registration in both Children's nursing and Learning Disabilities nursing, giving you a breadth of clinical competence that is rare and highly valued in a healthcare system that increasingly recognises the overlap between these two populations. Children and young people with learning disabilities require practitioners who can meet complex, often co-occurring needs with skill, sensitivity and a genuinely person-centred approach. The programme is structured as a Master's-level qualification, reflecting both the academic demands and the clinical complexity involved in preparing for dual registration. You will study the distinct physiological, psychological and social needs of children and of people with learning disabilities, as well as the shared principles of ethical nursing practice, safeguarding, communication and family-centred care. Extensive practice placement hours across both fields give you direct clinical experience in paediatric settings, learning disability services, community nursing, and specialist support environments, building the confidence and competence that NMC registration requires. Edge Hill's location in Lancashire provides access to a wide range of NHS and social care placements across the North West. Graduates who achieve dual registration have an exceptionally strong position in the graduate job market, eligible to work across two fields and well placed for roles in paediatric services, specialist learning disability support, community nursing, CAMHS, and the growing area of complex needs care. Many pursue further postgraduate development in clinical specialisms, education, research or advanced practice. Leadership roles in nursing are an accessible long-term pathway for those who combine clinical excellence with organisational capability.
