MSci Nursing (Child) and Leadership
About this course
Children's nursing combined with leadership is a degree that prepares you not only to register as a nurse caring for infants, children, and young people, but to develop the leadership qualities that will allow you to shape the environments in which that care is delivered. Child nursing is a specialism that demands clinical competence, emotional resilience, and the ability to build trust with patients who are frightened, families who are under stress, and multidisciplinary teams who are working under pressure. At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time programme is a holistic learning experience designed to produce emotionally resilient and transformational Registered Nurses of the future. Unusually, the programme leads to a Masters level award alongside NMC registration, making it an exceptionally ambitious qualification for applicants who do not already hold a degree. Over four years you will develop your clinical knowledge and skills in paediatric nursing, including child development, family-centred care, pharmacology, and the assessment and management of acute and chronic conditions in children. The leadership strand develops your understanding of healthcare systems, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and the skills needed to lead teams, advocate for patients, and drive change in clinical settings. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points, and the programme is studied full time. Clinical placements across a range of children's settings are an essential component, giving you direct experience of the breadth of environments in which child nurses work. Graduates are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as Registered Nurses in children's nursing. Career paths include clinical leadership, specialist nursing, advanced practice, and management within NHS trusts, community health settings, and independent healthcare providers. The masters-level award also provides a strong foundation for doctoral study and academic careers in nursing.
