BSc Nursing - Mental Health
About this course
Mental health nursing is a field defined by the quality of human relationships. Where other branches of nursing rely heavily on physical interventions, mental health nurses work primarily through therapeutic communication, building trust with people who are often in profound distress and helping them to navigate conditions that can affect every aspect of their lives. The work spans acute inpatient settings, community teams, crisis services, and long-term care, and it demands a combination of clinical knowledge, emotional intelligence, and the capacity to hold complexity without being overwhelmed by it. At Robert Gordon University this three-year full-time programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand and respond to the often complex challenges experienced by people whose mental and physical wellbeing is at risk. You will study the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of mental health conditions, developing a broad understanding of how these factors interact. The curriculum is designed so that you build confidence in assessing a range of healthcare needs and in choosing approaches that are appropriate to the individual in front of you, rather than applying a single formula. Practice placements are central to the programme, taking you into the full range of settings where mental health nurses work. These placements allow you to apply what you have learned in real clinical environments, develop your professional identity, and build the practical skills that registration requires. You will be supported by academic and clinical mentors as you grow into the role. Graduating with a BSc in Mental Health Nursing and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council opens a wide range of career paths. Many graduates move into Band 5 staff nurse roles in inpatient or community settings, while others develop specialisms in areas such as eating disorders, forensic mental health, substance misuse, or older adult care. Further study towards prescribing qualifications, advanced clinical practice, or leadership roles is a natural next step for those who wish to progress within the profession.
