About this course
Norwegian and Polish is a language pairing that connects two distinct but equally significant corners of the European linguistic landscape. Norwegian is a North Germanic language spoken in one of Europe's wealthiest and most admired countries, a nation with extraordinary natural landscapes, a distinguished literary tradition, and a major role in energy and maritime industries. Polish is the most widely spoken West Slavic language, spoken by around 50 million people in Poland and by one of the largest diaspora communities in the UK, a language with a rich literary and cultural tradition and a country whose history is among the most dramatic and consequential in modern European history. This four-year full-time programme at University College London is taught within one of the UK's leading modern languages departments. You will develop proficiency in both Norwegian and Polish, studying grammar, spoken and written communication, and the literary and cultural history of each country. UCL has particular strength in Scandinavian and Slavic languages, and the programme takes both seriously as full academic disciplines rather than merely communication tools. London provides access to both Norwegian and Polish cultural communities and to professional networks where these languages have real value. Graduates from this programme pursue careers in translation and interpretation, international business, journalism, diplomacy, the energy sector where Norway is particularly significant, and academic research. Polish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the UK due to migration, making graduates with high-level Polish proficiency valuable to a wide range of public services, businesses, and community organisations.
