About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system in all its complexity, from the molecular biology of individual neurons through to the neural circuits and brain systems that underlie perception, movement, memory, emotion, language and consciousness. It draws on biology, chemistry, physics, psychology and medicine, and it sits at one of the most active frontiers in contemporary science, with major implications for our understanding of mental health conditions, neurological diseases and the fundamental nature of human experience. Studying neuroscience means engaging with both the established foundations of the discipline and the cutting-edge research that continues to reshape our understanding of the brain. At the University of Nottingham, this four-year full-time programme includes both a foundation year, providing supported preparation for the scientific and mathematical demands of the degree, and an integrated placement year, giving you the chance to spend time in a research, clinical or industry environment as part of your studies. A year abroad is also built into the programme, enabling you to study at a partner institution in another country and to encounter neuroscience research and education in a different academic context. You will study neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, molecular and cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, pharmacology and the neuroscience of behaviour and mental processes. Typical entry is around 152 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from neuroscience programmes go on to careers in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical neuroscience, neurotechnology, public health, science communication and medical education. Many continue to doctoral research in neuroscience, which is one of the most actively funded fields in biological science. Others move into medicine, clinical psychology, nursing or occupational therapy through postgraduate routes. The analytical and scientific skills developed through neuroscience are also valued in data science, healthcare technology and the consulting professions.
