BSc Neuroscience
About this course
Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, from the molecular machinery of individual neurons to the large-scale organisation of the brain and the complex behaviours that it produces. It is one of the most ambitious scientific enterprises of our era, asking how electrical and chemical signals in neural circuits give rise to perception, thought, memory, emotion, and action, and what goes wrong when those systems are disrupted by disease, injury, or ageing. The answers to these questions matter profoundly for medicine, for understanding human nature, and for the design of technologies that interact with the nervous system. At the University of Dundee, this four-year, full-time degree gives you a comprehensive grounding in how the nervous system functions in both healthy and diseased states. You will study the cellular and molecular biology of neurons and glia, the anatomy and physiology of the brain and spinal cord, the mechanisms underlying sensory and motor function, the neural bases of learning and memory, and the pathophysiology of neurological and psychiatric conditions. The programme includes the possibility of a year abroad, giving you the chance to study in an international research environment and to broaden your scientific perspective. Graduates from neuroscience programmes work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, academic neuroscience research, clinical neuroscience, science communication, education, and healthcare. The analytical and laboratory skills you develop are also valued in data science, health technology, and the growing field of computational neuroscience. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in neuroscience, pharmacology, biomedical research, clinical psychology, or medicine, deepening their expertise for research or clinical careers.
