About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, concerned with understanding how the brain and the rest of the nervous system develop, function, and fail. It is one of the most rapidly advancing areas in all of biomedical science, bringing together molecular and cellular biology, physiology, psychology, and increasingly computational methods to address questions about perception, cognition, memory, emotion, and the neural basis of neurological and psychiatric conditions. The field sits at one of the most exciting frontiers of human knowledge, with new discoveries regularly transforming our understanding of how minds and brains work. This four-year, full-time MSci programme at Queen Mary University of London is taught jointly by the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, combining strengths, expertise, and state-of-the-art facilities from both. You will study the biology of neurons, the organisation of the brain and nervous system, sensory and motor systems, the neuroscience of cognition and behaviour, and the mechanisms by which neurological and psychiatric disorders arise. The MSci structure allows you to engage with current research at a more advanced level, developing genuine research skills and experience that are valuable for both academic and industry careers. Graduates of neuroscience programmes move into research careers in academia, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology firms, where neuroscience is central to the development of treatments for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, and anxiety. Clinical neuroscience, neuropsychology, neurotechnology, and science communication are also common destinations. The MSci qualification provides a particularly strong foundation for doctoral research in neuroscience or related biomedical disciplines, and for senior scientific roles in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Many graduates also pursue clinical training in medicine, psychology, or related health professions.
