BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre is a performance form that demands exceptional versatility from its practitioners. Actors in musical theatre must be capable singers, skilled dancers, and truthful actors simultaneously, integrating all three disciplines into performances that are technically precise and emotionally authentic. The form encompasses a remarkable range, from classic mid-twentieth century American and British shows through to contemporary musical drama, immersive and site-specific work, and hybrid productions that draw on film and digital media. Training in musical theatre is rigorous and highly practical, built around studio work, rehearsal, and performance. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time programme trains you as a multidisciplinary performer within a conservatoire-style environment that is informed by Surrey's awareness of the future of the profession. The curriculum integrates digital skills and an awareness of technology into the training, recognising that the contexts in which musical theatre performers now work are expanding beyond the traditional stage into digital platforms and new media. You will develop your vocal technique, your dance skills across a range of styles, and your acting craft, working in each area with specialist tutors and developing the ability to bring all three together in performance. Productions, workshops with industry professionals, and collaborative projects provide the practical performance experience that is essential to professional development. You will graduate with the technical range and professional confidence to pursue a career as a performer in musical theatre and related performance contexts. Graduates go on to work as professional performers in West End and regional theatre, touring productions, cruise ships, television, film, and digital entertainment. Many also move into education, community arts, choreography, and arts facilitation. Further training through postgraduate programmes in performance is an option for those wishing to deepen a particular specialism.
