BA Music Production
About this course
Music production is the craft and discipline of capturing, shaping, and realising musical ideas in recorded form. It sits at the heart of the contemporary music industry, encompassing the work of studio producers, recording engineers, beatmakers, and composers who use digital and analogue tools to create the sounds that become the songs, albums, and soundscapes we listen to. The field has been transformed by digital technology, but the fundamental skills of listening, arranging, mixing, and communicating sonic intent remain as central as ever. At York St John University, this part-time programme allows you to develop your production skills and musical creativity at a pace suited to your circumstances. You will develop proficiency in recording studio techniques, composition, and the production software that is central to professional practice, alongside the broader musical knowledge and critical listening skills that distinguish effective producers from technically competent operators. The programme immerses you in the audio industry, connecting academic learning with the practices and contexts of professional music production. A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are built in, allowing you to gain professional experience in studios, labels, or production companies during your studies. Graduates go on to careers as music producers, recording and mixing engineers, sound designers, composers for film and television, music supervisors, and studio managers. Some build independent production careers working across multiple artists and genres, while others work within record companies, post-production houses, or games companies where production skills are valued. The combination of technical proficiency and creative sensibility the degree develops is also applicable in roles in radio, podcasting, advertising, and the broader audio industry. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in music production, sound design, or music technology.
