BA Music Performance
About this course
Music Performance at degree level is the intensive development of your skills, knowledge and artistry as a performing musician. It is a discipline of sustained commitment and deep exploration, demanding not only technical mastery of your instrument or voice but the musical intelligence, interpretive depth and communicative sensitivity that turn technical competence into compelling performance. A performance degree provides the environment of expert tuition, regular performing opportunities, collaborative ensemble work and critical reflection that a serious musician needs to develop their full potential. At the University of Chichester, this part-time programme provides individual tuition in instrumental and vocal performance alongside participation in a rich programme of musical ensembles. You will have the opportunity to join orchestras, choirs and taught performance ensembles, performing throughout the year in concerts, recitals and masterclasses given by visiting artists. The programme addresses the full breadth of what it means to be a professional performer, including the psychological dimension of performing, techniques for managing performance anxiety, the use of gesture and movement in live music, and the professional skills of concert and event hosting. Part-time study makes the programme accessible to musicians who have other commitments alongside their studies. Music Performance graduates go on to careers as performers in orchestras, chamber ensembles, as soloists, in session work and in a wide range of other musical contexts. Many develop portfolio careers that combine performance with music teaching, accompanying, conducting, music direction and other professional activities. Building a professional profile and network through performing opportunities is central to a music career, and the ensembles, concerts and connections made during your studies are an important part of that process. Many graduates pursue further professional training at postgraduate level, and teaching in schools and music services is another well-supported route.
