About this course

Music at the Guildhall School is a performance and composition training of an entirely different character from a standard university music degree. The Guildhall is one of the world's leading conservatoires, and its BMus programme is built around world-class one-to-one tuition with specialist professors across all principal study areas: strings, wind, brass, percussion, keyboard, vocal studies, composition, electronic and produced music, and jazz. This is an institution where the development of your individual artistic voice and technical mastery as a performer or composer is the central purpose of the degree. This four-year full-time programme combines intensive principal study with a rich supporting curriculum including ensemble playing, chamber music, conducting, music history, and theory. The tutorial relationship at the core of the programme gives you sustained individual attention from faculty who are themselves leading performers and composers, and the ensemble and collaborative work exposes you to the reality of professional musical life from early in the degree. You will develop your technique, your musicianship, and your interpretive intelligence through a programme that is demanding, immersive, and deeply oriented towards professional readiness. The Guildhall's location in the Barbican in central London gives you access to one of the world's great centres of musical life, and the school's professional connections, performance opportunities, and guest faculty bring the international music world into close contact with your studies. Graduates go on to careers as professional performers, session musicians, orchestral players, soloists, chamber musicians, composers, producers, and educators. The reputation of the Guildhall and the professional orientation of the training give graduates a significant advantage in a highly competitive field. Many continue to further professional study or postgraduate study in performance, composition, or music education.
