About this course

Music and Japanese is a degree that brings together the study and practice of music with the language, literature and culture of one of the world's most distinctive civilisations. Music at degree level encompasses the history and theory of music across different traditions, critical engagement with musical texts and performances, and the development of your own musical skills and understanding. Japanese is one of the world's great languages, spoken by over 125 million people and the gateway to a culture of extraordinary richness, encompassing literature, philosophy, film, art and a contemporary creative industry that has significant global influence. At SOAS, which specialises in the cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible academic entry route. SOAS's distinctive focus means that the music component can engage with non-Western musical traditions alongside Western classical and popular music, which is genuinely enriching for a student also studying Japanese. You will develop Japanese language skills from your starting level, study Japanese literature and culture, and engage with the historical and contemporary dimensions of Japanese society. In music, you will develop your analytical, theoretical and historical understanding across a range of traditions. The combination of music and Japanese is unusual and produces graduates who can engage with Japanese musical culture, classical and popular, in the language in which it is created and discussed, which is a distinctive and valued asset. Graduates move into music education, arts administration, cultural institutions, translation and interpreting, international business with Japan, the creative industries and academic research. Postgraduate study in music, Japanese studies or area studies is a natural option.
