BA Modern Languages with Foundation Year
About this course
Modern languages is the study of contemporary spoken and written languages alongside the literatures, cultures, histories, and societies with which they are associated. At its best, a modern languages degree goes far beyond the practical acquisition of linguistic skills to develop a genuine engagement with the intellectual, artistic, and social life of other cultures, making you a more culturally aware, analytically capable, and professionally versatile graduate. Language learning at university level involves literature, film, history, linguistics, politics, and cultural theory, building a rich understanding of the world that monolingual education cannot provide. At Birkbeck, which has a well-established tradition in modern languages and a commitment to accessible higher education for students who study alongside other commitments, this part-time programme allows you to specialise in one or two languages from a choice that includes French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese. You will develop the literature, history, film, thought, and visual culture associated with your chosen languages alongside your linguistic proficiency, becoming a highly capable linguist with a genuinely deep understanding of the cultures your languages open up. Birkbeck's part-time structure allows you to pursue this degree without giving up your professional or personal commitments. Modern language graduates are in consistent demand across a wide range of professional fields. Careers in translation and interpreting, education, the civil service, journalism, international business, diplomacy, the cultural sector, and many other areas benefit from the linguistic and cultural competence that language degrees provide. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in languages, area studies, translation studies, or related disciplines, and the analytical and communicative skills developed through the degree transfer well to many sectors where deep cultural understanding is valued.
