MA Modern Languages (German and Italian) and Ancient History
About this course
German and Italian studied together alongside ancient history is a combination of remarkable intellectual range, connecting two of Europe's most important modern languages with the deep history of the Mediterranean world that shaped them both. German opens access to one of the largest and most culturally significant language communities in Europe, with a rich tradition in philosophy, music, science, and literature. Italian connects you to one of the world's great artistic and cultural traditions and to a language that carries within it the traces of the Latin heritage it shares with ancient history. Ancient history, in turn, asks fundamental questions about the civilisations of Greece and Rome that gave rise to so much of what German and Italian speakers have inherited. At the University of St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your proficiency in both German and Italian to a high level of communicative competence while also providing rigorous engagement with the history and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world. You will be able to follow your own interests in both language communities, exploring the cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands and the Italianate world across literature, history, politics, and culture. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the immersion experience that language learning at this level requires. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the demanding and competitive nature of entry to a three-field degree at St Andrews. Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy, international organisations, the foreign service, translation, journalism, academia, international business, and the cultural sector. Postgraduate study in any of the three fields is a natural continuation.
