About this course

Modern Languages combined with English at the University of St Andrews brings together three disciplines that are fundamentally concerned with how language works, how literature reflects and shapes culture, and how meaning is made and communicated across time and space. French, Russian and English each carry rich literary traditions and distinct cultural histories, and studying all three in parallel develops a breadth and depth of humanistic understanding that few degree combinations can match. This is a four-year MA (Hons) programme that takes all three subjects seriously, developing language skills to a high level alongside literary and critical analysis. In French, you will engage with the language, literature and culture of France and the Francophone world, developing communicative proficiency while reading authors who have shaped European thought across centuries. In Russian, you will study the language from its grammatical foundations through to advanced literary and cultural analysis, working with some of the greatest prose writers and poets in any tradition. English adds a third literary and critical lens, broadening the range of texts and analytical approaches available to you. The year abroad built into the programme gives you the opportunity to spend time in French and Russian-speaking environments, consolidating your language skills and deepening your cultural understanding through direct experience. Graduates of multilingual degree programmes have an intellectual profile that is genuinely rare and highly valued. Careers include roles in diplomacy, the civil service, translation and interpreting, international business, journalism, publishing, education, and the cultural sector. The combination of French, Russian and English is particularly valued in contexts where engagement with Eastern European and post-Soviet affairs is relevant, including international organisations, government, and academic research. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, comparative literature, Slavonic studies or French studies.
