MA Modern Languages (French and Persian) and Ancient History
About this course
Modern Languages, Ancient History, French and Persian is an intellectually distinctive programme that brings together languages from different families and different periods of history, alongside the study of the ancient world in its broadest dimensions. French connects you to one of Europe's great literary and cultural traditions and one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Persian, Farsi, is the language of Iran and of a literary tradition stretching back more than a millennium, encompassing some of the most celebrated poetry in world literature, from Ferdowsi and Hafez to Rumi, as well as the contemporary culture of a strategically significant region. Ancient History provides the deep historical framework within which these modern languages and cultures can be situated, examining the civilisations of Greece, Rome, and the ancient Near East. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) develops all three strands to a serious level of academic engagement. You will develop French and Persian language skills alongside a rigorous study of the ancient world through its primary sources, historiography, archaeology, and cultural history. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to spend time in language environments and to deepen your cultural understanding. St Andrews's combination of strong language teaching, active research in both modern and ancient history, and international student community provides an exceptional environment for this demanding and rewarding programme. Graduates are well placed for careers in diplomacy, international relations, journalism, the civil service, education, cultural institutions, research, and any professional context where France, Iran, or the ancient world is relevant. The combination of Persian and French alongside ancient historical knowledge is particularly distinctive in competitive professional environments. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in modern languages, Persian studies, classics, or international affairs.
