MA Modern Languages (French and Italian) and Management
About this course
French, Italian, and management together form a combination whose logic is compelling in an increasingly European and international business environment. French and Italian are two of the major languages of Europe, spoken across countries that include some of the continent's largest economies and that are home to many of the world's most significant brands in fashion, food, luxury goods, engineering, and finance. Management provides the analytical and practical framework for understanding how organisations work and how decisions are made within them. At St Andrews you will develop high-level proficiency in both French and Italian through study of language, literature, and culture, engaging with Francophone and Italian-speaking worlds in their full diversity. Management study covers strategy, organisational behaviour, finance, marketing, and the analytical methods that underpin good business decision-making. The combination gives you the cultural and linguistic access to work effectively in French and Italian-speaking environments, combined with the management knowledge to contribute as a professional to those environments. The four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, which is an essential element of any language degree, giving you the opportunity to spend time in France, Italy, or a Francophone country and to develop the fluency and cultural confidence that language study in the classroom cannot fully build. Graduates go on to careers in international business, management, consulting, financial services, the civil service, cultural organisations, and any field where high-level language skills and management knowledge combine to create genuine professional value. The ability to work in French, Italian, and English in management contexts is genuinely distinctive. Postgraduate study in business, management, or language-related fields is also a well-established route.
