About this course

Modern history focuses on the period from around 1800 to the present, a span that encompasses the industrial revolution, the age of empire, two world wars, the Cold War, decolonisation, and the emergence of the contemporary global order. It is a period of extraordinary transformation, in which the material conditions of human life, the political organisation of societies, the technologies of communication and warfare, and the cultural possibilities open to individuals have all changed beyond recognition. Studying modern history means engaging with this transformation in depth, developing the skills to interrogate evidence, construct historical arguments, and engage with the competing interpretations that historians have offered. At the University of Lincoln, the modern history programme specialises in the period from 1800 to the present, giving you a close focus on the historical forces that have shaped the world as it is today. This concentration allows for genuine depth: rather than surveying the whole of the past, you develop a more detailed and nuanced understanding of the period most directly relevant to making sense of contemporary social, cultural, and political complexity. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context during your studies, which is an advantage in the graduate job market. History graduates are valued across a wide range of careers because the skills the discipline develops are genuinely transferable: the ability to analyse evidence critically, to construct well-supported arguments, and to communicate complex ideas clearly. Common career destinations include the civil service, journalism, education, law, publishing, heritage, archives and libraries, and the cultural sector. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in history, and the degree provides an excellent foundation for research at higher levels.
