BA Modern Greek and Beginners' Russian
About this course
Modern languages open the door to other ways of thinking. Learning to communicate fluently in Greek and Russian is not simply a practical skill, though it is certainly that. It is also an invitation to engage with two rich literary traditions, two distinct philosophical and historical inheritances, and two societies that have shaped European and world culture in profound ways. Modern Greek connects you to a language that has been continuously spoken for longer than almost any other in Europe, and to a contemporary culture navigating its place in the modern world. Russian gives you access to one of the great literary traditions in world literature, a vast and complex geopolitical space, and a language spoken by hundreds of millions of people. At Oxford, this four-year full-time programme provides both rigorous practical training in written and spoken language and an extensive education in the literature and thought produced in these languages. You will learn to write and speak with fluency and precision, while also studying literature across a broad range of periods, from medieval to contemporary, and exploring other dimensions of the cultures you are studying, potentially including linguistics, philology, film, or gender studies. Beginning Russian as a new language alongside your Modern Greek studies means your four years are structured to bring you to a high level of competence in both. The typical entry tariff for this course is 168 UCAS points. Graduates of modern languages degrees from Oxford are exceptionally well prepared for careers that demand communication, analytical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding. Many move into diplomacy, the foreign office, international business, law, journalism, translation, publishing, academia, and public service. The ability to work in multiple languages, combined with the depth of cultural knowledge and analytical skills developed at Oxford, gives graduates a distinct advantage in competitive career markets. Postgraduate study in languages, linguistics, area studies, or international relations is also a common and natural progression.
