BA Modern European Languages and History
About this course
Modern European languages and history is a combination that approaches the past through the languages in which it was lived and written, and approaches languages through the historical contexts that gave them shape. European history cannot be fully understood without access to primary sources in French, German, Spanish, Italian, or other languages, and those languages cannot be fully understood without the historical knowledge that explains how they developed and what they carried. Studying them together produces a richer grasp of both than either would yield alone. At Durham, this four-year programme includes a year abroad spent in a country where you will use the language you are studying, giving you the opportunity to deepen your linguistic fluency and engage with living culture and historical memory in a direct way. You will develop reading, writing, and speaking skills in your chosen language alongside rigorous historical study that spans medieval, early modern, and modern European history. Durham's history department is one of the strongest in the UK, and the languages department has a strong tradition of combining linguistic and cultural study with historical engagement. Graduates of modern European languages and history programmes pursue careers in journalism, diplomacy, the civil service, translation and interpreting, academia, archiving, broadcasting, publishing, international organisations, and cultural institutions. The combination of linguistic precision and historical depth is valued wherever analysis of complex European contexts is required. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, area studies, international relations, or languages, while others enter competitive graduate programmes in government, law, finance, or media where linguistic range and analytical breadth are assets.
