BSc Medicinal Chemistry
About this course
Medicinal chemistry is the science concerned with the design, synthesis, and development of pharmaceutical compounds that prevent, treat, or cure disease. It sits at the intersection of chemistry and biology, requiring both a deep understanding of chemical structure and reactivity and a grasp of how molecules interact with biological systems. Every medicine that has transformed modern healthcare, from antibiotics and antivirals to drugs for cancer, heart disease, and mental illness, owes its existence to the work of medicinal chemists who understand how to build molecules that act on the body in precise and predictable ways. At the University of Leicester this three-year full-time programme gives you a solid grounding in chemistry alongside its specific applications in drug development. You will study organic synthesis, biochemistry, pharmacology, and the principles that guide how chemists design compounds with particular biological activities. You will develop strong laboratory skills alongside the analytical and quantitative thinking that chemical research demands. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience in an industrial or research setting and to study in an international context. Work placement is also integrated into the degree. Medicinal chemistry graduates are in demand across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, where they work in drug discovery, process chemistry, analytical science, and quality assurance. Roles in regulatory affairs, patent work, scientific writing, and clinical research organisations are also common destinations. Some graduates move into academic research, pursuing postgraduate study at master's or doctoral level to develop expertise in a particular area of chemistry or pharmacology. The combination of chemical and biological knowledge developed on the degree opens doors across health, science, and related professional fields.
