BA Media Production
About this course
Media production is the craft and practice of creating content for broadcast and digital distribution, spanning television, radio, online video, podcasting and the growing range of formats that connect content makers with audiences. It is a discipline that demands both creative vision and technical competence: understanding how to develop story ideas, how to write, produce, shoot, record and edit content, and how to work within the professional structures of broadcasting and digital media. It also requires an understanding of the audience and the industry context in which content is made and distributed. This part-time degree at the University of Sunderland includes a year abroad, giving you international experience alongside your media production studies. The programme provides practical training in television and radio production, with the opportunity to pitch to industry professionals and to broadcast live on an award-winning radio station. You will develop skills across the range of production formats and roles that the media industry encompasses, from scripting and directing to editing and distribution, building the portfolio of practical work that professional media careers require. The year abroad adds an international perspective on media production that is increasingly relevant as content distribution becomes global. Graduates work across the full range of broadcast and digital media, in television production, radio, online video, podcast production, corporate media, documentary filmmaking and content creation for brands and organisations. The combination of practical skills and professional experience from the radio and television facilities makes graduates competitive for entry-level production roles. Many develop specialist expertise in particular formats or genres as their careers progress. Further study in media production, journalism or digital media is an option for those who wish to develop specific technical or editorial skills.
