BA Media
About this course
Media studies examines how content is created, distributed and consumed across the full range of contemporary platforms, from television and film to digital publishing, social media, podcasting and radio. It is both a practical discipline and a critical one: you develop skills in making media content alongside the analytical and theoretical frameworks for understanding what media does, how it shapes culture and public discourse, and how industries and technologies interact to produce the media environment we inhabit. The rapid evolution of media platforms and business models makes this one of the most dynamic fields in the contemporary creative economy. At Edge Hill University, this part-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you international exposure and professional experience alongside your academic studies. The programme explores the media industry from multiple angles, developing your ability to work in marketing, radio, filmmaking, journalism and the broader range of roles that the evolving media sector offers. You will develop both creative and critical skills, learning to make content for different formats and audiences while also understanding the industrial, cultural and political contexts in which media operates. Edge Hill's connections with the media industry and the North West's significant media sector support a practically grounded education. Graduates of media programmes go on to careers in television and film production, journalism, radio, podcasting, digital content creation, social media management, marketing and public relations, advertising, publishing, arts administration and communications. The combination of creative production skills and analytical understanding makes media graduates versatile across the full range of the communications and creative industries. Further study in media, film, journalism, communications or a creative specialism is available for those who want to develop a particular area further.
