BA Media and Film & TV
About this course
Media and Film and TV is a degree that combines the critical and theoretical study of media with a focused engagement with the moving image in both its cinematic and television forms. Media Studies asks how different media industries are organised, how audiences engage with media content, and how media representations shape our understanding of the world. Film and TV studies develops the specific analytical tools for engaging with moving image texts: how narrative, cinematography, editing, sound, and performance combine to create meaning, and how different genres, institutions, and national traditions shape what we watch. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme develops both analytical and practical skills. You will study media theory and the sociology of media institutions alongside critical analysis of films and television programmes, developing fluency in both written academic argument and screen analysis. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you direct professional experience in media or screen production environments, which is one of the most effective ways to make the connection between academic study and industry practice. You will also have opportunities to develop practical production skills, working with the tools and processes used in professional media and screen contexts. Nottingham Trent's industry connections and its emphasis on employability mean the programme is designed with the graduate creative labour market in mind, preparing you not just to understand media but to work within it. Graduates pursue careers in television production, film development, journalism, digital content creation, marketing and communications, public relations, and arts administration. Many go on to postgraduate study in film, media, journalism, or creative producing. The combination of theoretical grounding and practical orientation is well suited to the demands of creative industries that value both cultural intelligence and production competence.
