BA Media and Communications
About this course
Media and communications is the study of how meaning is produced, distributed, and consumed through different media forms and communication systems. It is a discipline that ranges from the analysis of texts and images to the examination of media industries and ownership, from the study of journalism and public discourse to questions of digital culture, social media, and the political economy of communication. It asks how media shape public understanding, how they are used to exercise and contest power, and how audiences engage with and make sense of the messages they receive. At Exeter you will study this three-year full-time programme, engaging with media and communications across historical, theoretical, and empirical perspectives. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you professional and international experience that enriches your understanding of how media industries and communication practices work in different national and cultural contexts. You will develop strong analytical and research skills alongside practical communication abilities, studying media theory, journalism, digital culture, the political economy of media, and the ethical dimensions of communication practice. Media and communications graduates enter careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, public relations, communications consultancy, advertising, social media management, content production, policy and regulatory bodies, and academia. The analytical and writing skills developed through the degree are also valued in the civil service, charities, and the many organisations that use communication strategically to influence public understanding and behaviour. The year abroad and placement experience strengthen both professional networks and the depth of real-world understanding graduates bring to the job market. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in journalism, media studies, communications, or related fields.
