BA Media and Communication
About this course
Media and communication is the study of how messages are produced, distributed, received and understood across the full range of media: film, television, radio, digital platforms, social media, advertising and journalism. It is concerned both with the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of media, what films and television programmes mean and how they create meaning, and with the economic, political and social structures that shape what gets made and who gets to see it. As media has become more pervasive and more contested, the ability to think critically about how it works and what it does has become genuinely important. At York St John University, this part-time programme invites you to learn about the many ways media influences society and culture, as the university's own description puts it, combining creative and analytical engagement with film, television, digital media, advertising and more. The programme includes a foundation year for those who need additional preparation, a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, providing a richly structured set of routes to develop creative, analytical and professional capabilities across the full duration of the degree. You will develop both the theoretical frameworks to analyse media critically and the practical skills to produce it, working in formats that range from written journalism and documentary to digital content and creative media projects. The creative and analytical combination the degree develops is valuable in a media and communications landscape where the skills of production and criticism are both in demand, and where the ability to understand audiences, platforms and the contexts in which media circulates is central to effective practice. Graduates go on to careers in television and film production, digital content creation, journalism, public relations, marketing communications, advertising, broadcasting, arts administration and education. Further study in media studies, film, journalism or a specialist area of creative practice is also a common route for those seeking to deepen their expertise.
