BA Media and Communication
About this course
Media and communication is a discipline that examines the systems, technologies, and practices through which meaning is produced and shared in contemporary society. It takes seriously both the content of media, what films, news, social media, advertising, and popular culture say and how they say it, and the structures through which that content is created, distributed, and consumed, including the industries, institutions, platforms, and regulatory frameworks that shape the media landscape. It is a field of study that has become more important as media has become more ubiquitous, more global, and more contested. At the University of Hull this four-year full-time programme develops your critical and analytical engagement with media across a diverse range of forms from every corner of the globe, alongside the practical skills to create and deliver media content using a range of digital tools. You will examine the relationship between media and society, exploring how media shapes and is shaped by culture, politics, and economy, and developing the research skills to interrogate those relationships with rigour. The practical dimension of the degree ensures that your analytical understanding is grounded in the realities of media production. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the broadly inclusive and accessible character of the programme. You will develop critical media analysis, research skills, digital production competence, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with the role media plays in shaping public life. Graduates pursue careers in broadcasting, journalism, digital marketing, public relations, social media management, content production, policy, research, and education. Postgraduate study in media studies, journalism, digital communications, or creative media production is a natural continuation for those wanting to specialise.
