BEng Mechatronic Engineering with Foundation Year
About this course
Mechatronic engineering is the discipline that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control theory to design intelligent systems. It is the field behind robotics, automated manufacturing, medical devices, automotive systems, drones, and many of the smart technologies that are transforming industry. Engineers who can work across the boundaries between these traditionally separate disciplines are in high demand as automation and intelligent systems become central to how the economy works. At the University of Huddersfield this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which gives you a solid grounding in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles before you move into the main degree. This makes the programme accessible to students who have the aptitude and interest but who need to build their scientific foundations before tackling degree-level content. The foundation year also develops the study skills and professional awareness that will serve you throughout the rest of the programme. The main degree covers mechanical systems, electronics, programmable control systems, robotics, and design engineering, with significant practical and project-based work alongside theoretical learning. You will use industry-standard software and equipment and develop problem-solving approaches that reflect real engineering practice. The programme also includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you a full year of professional experience in an engineering environment before you complete the degree. This placement is a significant advantage when you graduate, both in terms of employability and in clarifying your professional direction. Graduates go on to careers in robotics, manufacturing, automotive engineering, aerospace, defence, medical technology, and systems integration. Many move into roles in product development, automation, and engineering consultancy. Further study options include master's degrees and routes towards chartered engineer status.
