BEng Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems. From turbines and engines to robotics and manufacturing equipment, mechanical engineers apply principles of physics and materials science to create and improve the machines and systems that underpin modern industry and infrastructure. The field is evolving rapidly, with digital design tools, additive manufacturing, and sustainable engineering reshaping what mechanical engineers do and how they do it. At Huddersfield, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured academic preparation before the main degree for students who benefit from additional scientific and mathematical grounding. The programme also incorporates a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional engineering experience within the degree. You will study mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, and control systems, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the practical engineering skills that employers in the sector value. The typical entry tariff is 88 points. Graduates of mechanical engineering programmes work across manufacturing, energy, transport, aerospace, construction, and engineering consultancy. The core skills of analysis, design, and problem-solving are valued across virtually every technology-intensive sector. Many graduates pursue professional engineering accreditation and work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Others go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas of mechanical engineering, energy systems, or advanced manufacturing.
