BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most enduring of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis and manufacture of mechanical systems. From engines and turbines to robotics, medical devices and renewable energy infrastructure, mechanical engineers work at the interface of physics, mathematics and creative problem-solving. The field demands both theoretical rigour and practical imagination, and its graduates are equipped to work across virtually every industry that makes or moves things. At Cardiff, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the core subjects of mechanical engineering. You will study the fundamental disciplines of statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science and manufacturing processes, alongside the mathematical and computational tools that engineers use to analyse and model systems. As you progress through the programme, you will apply these foundations to increasingly complex engineering challenges, developing your ability to design components and systems that perform reliably and efficiently. Cardiff's School of Engineering has a strong research base, and undergraduate students benefit from proximity to work at the frontier of the discipline. Mechanical engineers are needed in almost every sector of the modern economy. Transport and automotive engineering, aerospace, energy generation and distribution, manufacturing, construction, defence, robotics and the medical devices industry all draw heavily on mechanical engineering skills. The analytical and problem-solving abilities the degree develops are also valued in consultancy, project management and technical leadership roles. Many graduates choose to pursue professional accreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and postgraduate study in specialist areas such as advanced manufacturing, energy systems or robotics is a natural progression.
