Mechanical engineering and energy engineering together address one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century: how to design the systems and technologies that power human society in ways that are efficient, reliable, and sustainable. Mechanical engineering provides the foundational science of forces, materials, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics that underpins virtually all engineered systems, while energy engineering applies these principles specifically to the generation, distribution, storage, and use of energy. Their combination is particularly timely as the world transitions toward low-carbon energy systems and seeks engineers who understand both the mechanics of energy conversion and the environmental implications of energy decisions. This five-year full-time MEng at Heriot-Watt University is a master's-level programme that takes you from a sound engineering foundation through to specialist knowledge in energy topics and environmental impact assessment and management. You will develop the analytical and design skills to tackle challenging professional tasks related to energy provision and utilisation, learning to apply creative technical thinking to real-world problems and to take responsibility for decision-making in areas where engineering, energy, and environmental considerations intersect.
