About this course

Mechanical and electrical engineering is a combined discipline that recognises the growing convergence between mechanical systems and the electrical and electronic technologies that control, power, and optimise them. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the creative and imaginative use of engineering principles and science to shape the world around us, through the development of new materials, technologies, processes, and products. Mechanical engineers design and develop everything that moves or has moving parts, from spacecraft and aircraft to racing cars and household goods, from robotic control of machinery to nanotechnologies, from mechanical hearts and artificial limbs to wind turbines. Electrical engineering adds the design and operation of the power and control systems that increasingly drive all of these physical systems. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding and skills across both disciplines, covering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, structural analysis, electronics, power systems, signal processing, control engineering, and the integration of mechanical and electrical systems in complex devices and machines. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage with engineering education and practice in another country. Aberdeen's engineering department has strong connections with the energy sector, particularly oil, gas, and renewables, reflecting the region's significant role in the UK energy industry. With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this programme prepares graduates for careers across mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems, automotive and aerospace engineering, robotics, manufacturing, and the many sectors that depend on the integration of mechanical and electrical capability. Professional development toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status through the appropriate engineering institutions is the standard career pathway. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in engineering or energy systems.
