MA Mathematics
About this course
Mathematics is a discipline of extraordinary reach and depth. At university level you move into territory that looks nothing like school mathematics: abstract algebra, real analysis, topology, number theory, differential equations, and the rigorous logical frameworks that underpin all of it. You learn to reason with precision, to construct and evaluate proofs, and to appreciate the deep connections that run between areas of mathematics that appear, on the surface, quite different. It is a discipline that rewards patience and rewards it with insight. This part-time programme at the University of Glasgow allows you to develop your mathematical knowledge and skills while managing other commitments alongside your studies. In the Honours years you will have considerable freedom to choose from a wide variety of courses, allowing you to shape your programme towards the areas of mathematics that interest you most, whether pure or applied, or oriented towards statistics and data. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in an international academic environment and to experience mathematical culture and research in a different university setting. The ambassador scheme offered alongside the programme provides the opportunity to spend time in schools, which is both a valuable civic contribution and excellent preparation for those who may be considering teaching. The flexibility of part-time study makes the programme well suited to students who are combining their degree with work or other responsibilities. Mathematics graduates are among the most broadly employable graduates in any field. Finance, actuarial science, data science, technology, engineering consultancy, public-sector analysis, and teaching all draw on mathematics graduates, often competitively. The analytical rigour and precision of mathematical training are valuable in any role that requires clear reasoning and quantitative skill. For those interested in teaching, a mathematics degree from Glasgow provides excellent preparation for postgraduate teacher training, and the ambassador scheme experience makes applications stronger. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, or related fields, building towards research or specialist professional careers. The part-time route at Glasgow allows you to earn a mathematics degree that carries the same intellectual weight and graduate value as its full-time equivalent.
