MA Mathematics and Spanish & Latin American Studies (4yrs)
About this course
Mathematics and Spanish and Latin American studies is a combination that pairs two disciplines with very different orientations, one engaged in the precision and abstraction of pure and applied mathematical reasoning, the other in the richness of a language spoken by over 500 million people and the cultures and histories of the Hispanic world. At the University of Aberdeen, both programmes are highly rated, and the four-year Scottish degree structure gives you the time to develop genuine depth in both before specialising in later years. A year abroad is built into the programme, providing the immersive linguistic and cultural experience that serious language study requires. In the mathematics strand, you will develop skills in analysis, algebra, calculus, statistics and the mathematical methods that underpin scientific and quantitative reasoning. The Spanish and Latin American studies component develops your linguistic competence to a high level while also introducing you to the literature, film, history, politics and contemporary society of Spain, Mexico, Argentina and the broader Hispanic world. Aberdeen's approach to Spanish goes beyond the purely literary, engaging with popular culture and media as well as canonical texts, giving the language study contemporary relevance alongside historical depth. A typical entry tariff of around 168 points is expected. Graduates from this combination have the analytical versatility of mathematics graduates alongside the cultural fluency and linguistic competence of Spanish specialists. Career paths span data analysis, quantitative research, financial services, education, translation, international business, journalism, the civil service and academic research in both the mathematical and Hispanic studies traditions. Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study in mathematics, Latin American studies or a related field, and the combination is particularly valued wherever quantitative skills and Spanish-language competence are both needed.
