MA Mathematics and Philosophy
About this course
Mathematics and philosophy together address some of the most fundamental questions human beings can ask: what exists, what can be known, and what can be proven. The two disciplines share a deep historical connection, both rooted in careful reasoning and precise argument, and their combination opens up questions about the nature of mathematics itself, including whether mathematical truths are discovered or invented, what it means for a proof to be valid, and how abstract structures relate to the physical world. Studying them together sharpens your thinking in ways that neither subject achieves alone. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year programme gives you the opportunity to develop substantial expertise in both disciplines. In mathematics you will build skills in proof, analysis, algebra and applied techniques, learning to work with rigour and precision across a range of areas. In philosophy you will study logic, epistemology, metaphysics and the philosophy of science, among other areas, developing the ability to construct and evaluate arguments carefully. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the chance to study at an international partner institution and broaden your perspective on both subjects and on academic life more generally. The combination of mathematical and philosophical training produces graduates with exceptionally strong analytical and reasoning skills. Common career destinations include law, finance, data analysis, computing, academic research and teaching, and the civil service. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, philosophy, logic, computer science or related disciplines, where the rigour of their combined training is a significant advantage. The degree is particularly well suited to those who enjoy thinking carefully about foundations and who want to understand not just how techniques work, but why.
