About this course

Marine biology is the study of life in the ocean, from microscopic phytoplankton and the bacteria of deep-sea hydrothermal vents to whales, coral reefs, and the complex ecosystems that regulate the chemistry of our planet. The oceans cover more than two thirds of the Earth's surface, produce a significant proportion of the oxygen we breathe, and absorb a large fraction of the carbon dioxide we emit. Understanding marine ecosystems and the organisms within them is therefore not merely a matter of scientific curiosity but one of fundamental environmental and societal importance. At Swansea University this four-year, full-time programme includes a year in applied research, during which you spend time in a research environment putting your knowledge and skills to work on real scientific questions. The curriculum provides both the breadth and the depth needed to develop a thorough understanding of marine ecosystems and the biological principles that govern life in the ocean, covering topics including marine ecology, oceanography, animal physiology, conservation biology, and the impacts of human activities on ocean systems. Swansea's coastal location in South Wales provides an ideal environment for fieldwork and practical marine science training. Graduates of marine biology go on to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation organisations, government agencies, marine protected area management, fisheries management, and scientific research. Many work for bodies such as the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Natural Resources Wales, the Marine Conservation Society, or the Natural Environment Research Council. Others move into offshore industries, water quality management, or science communication, where knowledge of marine systems is directly relevant. The year in applied research is a significant asset in the job market, providing evidence of real scientific experience. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in marine biology, oceanography, conservation, or environmental science.
