About this course

Marine biology is the study of life in the sea, one of the least understood and most extraordinary environments on earth. Ocean systems cover more than two thirds of the planet's surface, produce much of the oxygen we breathe, regulate our climate, and support biodiversity of almost incomprehensible richness. Marine biologists study organisms from microscopic plankton to the largest animals that have ever lived, investigating their physiology, behaviour, ecology, and the ways in which human activity is changing the marine environment. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Chester includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation in science, as well as a year abroad that takes your studies into an international field or research context. The foundation year builds the biological and scientific foundations needed before the degree proper, which covers marine ecology, oceanography, fish and invertebrate biology, marine conservation, and the research methods used to study marine systems at sea and in the laboratory. Chester's proximity to the Welsh coast and to marine research facilities in the North West gives the programme a practical field dimension that is essential for a discipline where fieldwork is central to understanding. Marine biology graduates pursue careers in conservation and environmental management, fisheries science, government environmental agencies, NGOs, aquaria and zoological institutions, environmental impact consultancy, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study in marine biology, ocean science, conservation biology, or related disciplines, particularly if they want to pursue research or specialist scientific roles. The skills in field survey, data analysis, and scientific communication developed in the programme are also valued in environmental monitoring, ecological consultancy, and science communication.
