BSc Marine Biology And Zoology
About this course
Marine biology and zoology is a degree that combines two disciplines united by a fascination with the living world. Marine biology examines life in the ocean, from the microscopic organisms that form the base of marine food webs to the large mammals and fish that depend on them, and the physical and chemical systems that support them all. Zoology broadens that focus to encompass the full diversity of animal life, asking how animals evolve, how they behave, how they are classified, and how they interact with one another and with their environments. Together, they provide a thorough and complementary grounding in the science of life in both aquatic and terrestrial contexts. At Bangor University, this three-year, full-time programme is taught in one of the UK's leading centres for marine and environmental science, in a location on the Menai Strait that provides exceptional access to marine field sites. The programme includes a foundation year for students who need to build their scientific foundations before the main degree, and it features a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities throughout, making it one of the most practically and internationally rich marine biology and zoology degrees available. You will develop skills in field and laboratory investigation, ecological survey, taxonomy, physiology, and data analysis, gaining direct experience of the species, habitats, and methods that characterise professional practice in the biological sciences. Graduates of marine biology and zoology find careers in conservation, environmental consultancy, marine management, government environmental agencies, aquaria, research institutions, wildlife organisations, and the offshore and aquaculture sectors. Many also go on to postgraduate research in ecology, marine biology, conservation biology, or related fields. Bangor's strong research environment and coastal location provide an excellent foundation for a career in the life sciences, particularly for those whose passion is for the natural world in its marine and zoological dimensions.
