About this course

Marine biology and oceanography together examine the life of the sea and the physical, chemical, and geological processes that govern it. Marine biology is concerned with the extraordinary diversity of organisms that inhabit the ocean, from microscopic phytoplankton to the largest animals on Earth, and with how they have adapted to one of the most challenging and varied environments on the planet. Oceanography examines the physical properties and dynamics of the ocean, including currents, temperature, salinity, and the ocean's role in regulating the global climate. Together they provide a comprehensive scientific understanding of the marine environment. At Bangor University, you will develop rigorous scientific knowledge across marine biology and oceanography, building your understanding of marine ecosystems, ocean physics and chemistry, and the biodiversity and behaviour of marine organisms. The programme includes a foundation year, providing structured academic preparation before the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial hands-on and international experience. The full programme runs full-time over its total duration. Graduates of marine biology and oceanography programmes work in marine conservation, environmental consultancy, government agencies, the aquaculture industry, offshore energy, academic and government research, and international bodies concerned with ocean management. The scientific training is also valued in data analysis and environmental assessment. Many graduates go on to postgraduate research in marine biology, oceanography, or environmental science, where the practical and international experience gained during the degree is a significant advantage in a competitive research environment.
