MA Management and Sustainable Development
About this course
Management and Sustainable Development is a degree that addresses one of the central tensions of our time: how organisations can pursue their goals and grow while operating within the ecological and social limits of a shared planet. Management education has traditionally focused on strategy, operations, finance and leadership within the framework of competitive markets, but the imperative of sustainability is transforming what effective management means. This programme combines rigorous business and management training with a serious engagement with sustainability thinking, producing graduates who can lead organisations through the complex transitions that the next decades will demand. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is taught within a research-active environment with very high academic standards, reflected in a typical entry tariff of 216 points. You will engage with a wide range of organisations across sectors, learning to understand marketing, organisational behaviour and financial analysis while developing the critical thinking, problem-solving and evidence-evaluation skills that the most demanding professional and academic environments require. The sustainable development dimension of the degree extends management thinking into ecology, global governance, social equity and the systemic conditions that make human flourishing possible in the long term. Graduates from Management and Sustainable Development programmes are sought after by multinational corporations, sustainable business consultancies, NGOs, international development organisations, government agencies and the growing social enterprise sector. The ability to bring both managerial competence and genuine sustainability expertise to complex organisational challenges is increasingly rare and highly valued. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in management, sustainable development or business, and the degree is an excellent platform for doctoral research in management, environmental governance or organisational sustainability.
