About this course

Literature is the art of using language to create works that endure: novels, poetry, short fiction, drama, essays, and the many hybrid forms that resist easy categorisation. Studying it as an academic discipline means learning to read with care and precision, to engage with the historical and cultural contexts that shape what writers do and what readers bring to texts, and to articulate responses and arguments with the rigour and clarity that serious literary analysis demands. Literature is also one of the richest archives of human experience we have, and engaging with it seriously develops a capacity for empathy, for understanding perspectives very different from our own, and for thinking about the complexity of moral and emotional life. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme allows you to pursue literary study alongside other commitments, whether work, family, or community involvement. The Highland and Island context provides a distinctive backdrop for the study of literature, with a particularly strong connection to Gaelic and Scottish literary traditions alongside the broader canon of English-language and world literature. You will study literature across different periods and traditions, developing your analytical skills and your own interpretive voice through seminars, close reading, and essay writing. Graduates from literature programmes go on to work in publishing, journalism, education, broadcasting, the civil service, public relations, and a wide range of roles in which the ability to read, write, and communicate well is valued. The discipline develops transferable skills in analysis, argument, and written expression that serve graduates across many career paths. Many also continue to postgraduate study in literature, creative writing, education, or cultural studies, and some pursue careers as writers, editors, or in other creative and cultural roles.
