BA Linguistics with French
About this course
Linguistics with French combines the scientific study of how language works with the practical mastery of one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally important languages. Linguistics treats language as its primary object of study, asking how sounds, words, and sentences are structured, how meaning is created and communicated, how children acquire language, how language changes over time, and how it varies across social groups and communities. French adds a second dimension: genuine bilingual competence in a language that opens access to the cultures, literature, and intellectual life of the Francophone world. At Newcastle University, this four-year full-time programme develops your French language skills rapidly through expert tuition by specialist staff, many of whom are native speakers, giving you fluency and communicative confidence alongside rigorous linguistic analysis. The linguistics component engages you with language at both the conceptual and the empirical level, studying the structure of languages, the mechanisms of meaning, and the social and cultural phenomena that language reflects and shapes. Intercultural communication is a particular focus, developing your ability to observe, compare, and create across different cultural contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements, all of which add professional and international dimensions to your degree. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates of linguistics with French programmes are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, language teaching, publishing, journalism, international business, the civil service, and language technology. The combination of analytical rigour in linguistics and practical French fluency is valued in any field where understanding how communication works across linguistic and cultural boundaries matters. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, translation, or French studies, and the Newcastle degree provides a strong foundation for academic research or specialist professional training in any of these areas.
