MA Liberal Arts with History
About this course
Liberal arts with history is a degree that combines the breadth and interdisciplinary character of a liberal arts education with the depth and rigour of a specific discipline. Liberal arts programmes are built on the belief that the most important intellectual skills, including critical thinking, ethical reasoning, communication, and the capacity to engage with complexity, are best developed by studying across traditional disciplinary boundaries rather than within them. History provides the anchor for this broader education, developing the research skills, analytical frameworks, and evidence-based reasoning that are the historian's core contribution to the wider world. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme offers an interdisciplinary structure that allows you to study more than one subject in a connected and meaningful way. You will develop a broad understanding of major global challenges, including those related to the environment and social justice, alongside a grounding in the civic engagement and active citizenship that a liberal arts tradition values. The history component develops your capacity to engage with the past with rigour and depth. The degree includes a year abroad, broadening your perspective in both the liberal arts and historical dimensions of the programme. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the competitive character of entry. You will develop critical thinking, research and writing skills, cross-disciplinary intellectual flexibility, and the ability to engage seriously with complex questions about the world. Graduates pursue careers in education, journalism, the civil service, international organisations, the cultural sector, social policy, heritage, and any role that values genuine intellectual breadth alongside the rigour that historical study develops. Postgraduate study in history, global studies, or interdisciplinary fields is a natural continuation.
