About this course

Law with Welsh is a degree that combines a qualifying legal education with the study of the Welsh language, designed specifically for students who want to pursue careers in law in Wales and to do so with the linguistic capability to work bilingually. Wales has a unique legal and constitutional context: the devolution settlement has given the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) legislative competence in a growing range of areas, Welsh law is a developing and distinct category, and there is an active commitment within Welsh public life and the legal profession to bilingualism. A lawyer qualified in Wales who can work in both English and Welsh has access to a professional environment that values and increasingly requires that bilingual capacity. At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme is designed to provide a full qualifying law degree while developing your Welsh language skills, whether you are a fluent first-language Welsh speaker or coming to the language as a second language learner. Cardiff Law School is one of the UK's leading law schools, with strong research and teaching credentials, and the university's location in the capital of Wales gives you direct access to the Welsh legal and political institutions, including the Senedd, the Welsh Government, and the Welsh legal community. You will study the core areas of English and Welsh law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and trusts, and land law, with Welsh-medium teaching available across the degree. The legal Welsh component develops your ability to engage with legislation, legal documents, and client communication in Welsh. Graduates of law with Welsh move into legal practice in Wales, the Welsh Government, the Senedd, local authorities, the Welsh legal aid sector, and other organisations where bilingual legal capability is an asset. The degree also opens all the standard routes into solicitor and barrister training.
