Law with Spanish Legal Studies is a degree for people who want to combine rigorous legal training with genuine engagement with a different legal system and the language it operates in. Law varies significantly between jurisdictions: the principles, procedures, institutional structures and professional cultures of Spanish law differ in important ways from those of Scots and English law, and understanding those differences develops a comparative perspective that is increasingly valuable in a legal profession where cross-border work is common. Spanish is also one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, the language of the European Union and of more than 20 countries across three continents. At the University of Glasgow this four-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in Scots law alongside study of the Spanish legal system and the Spanish language. You will cover the core areas of legal doctrine, including obligations, property, public law, commercial law and European law, developing the analytical precision and close reasoning that legal study demands. The Spanish legal studies component introduces you to civil law traditions, comparative legal methodology and the substantive areas of Spanish law most relevant to legal practice in an international context. The language element develops your Spanish to a level sufficient for professional and academic engagement with Spanish legal materials. Graduates are qualified to pursue legal practice in Scotland and are exceptionally well positioned for careers in international law firms, particularly those with Spanish-speaking client bases or offices. Other career paths include the civil service, international organisations, commercial roles where legal and linguistic competence are both valued, and postgraduate study in European or comparative law.
