About this course

Law is the system of rules, rights and obligations through which societies organise themselves, resolve disputes and limit the exercise of power. Studying it at degree level means developing the ability to understand, interpret and critically evaluate legal rules and the arguments that arise from them, building a precision of thought and a rigour of reasoning that is valuable far beyond legal practice itself. A qualifying law degree opens the door to the legal professions in England and Wales, while also developing skills that are sought after across business, government, finance and the public sector. At the University of Law this four-year programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible route into legal education for those who benefit from a structured period of academic preparation before the LLB begins. More than ninety per cent of law lecturers at the University of Law are qualified solicitors, barristers or judges, which means your legal education is grounded in the realities of how law operates in professional practice rather than in abstract theory alone. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, land law and equity, alongside the skills of legal research, writing and argument that professional legal work demands. The University of Law's emphasis on practical legal skills means you develop the capabilities that employers in the legal profession specifically look for. Graduates who want to practise law typically go on to complete the Solicitors Qualifying Examination for the solicitor route or the Bar Course for the Bar. The practically focused education at the University of Law is designed to support this transition. Other graduates enter roles in compliance, legal operations, financial services regulation, commercial management and public policy, where legal knowledge and analytical capability are valued even outside formal legal practice. Some go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas of law or in related fields such as international relations or business.
