About this course

Law with criminology brings together two disciplines that ask connected but distinct questions about the rules that govern society and the behaviour that transgresses them. Law establishes the framework within which crime is defined, prosecuted, and adjudicated, providing the formal structures and principles through which disputes and wrongs are resolved. Criminology looks beneath that legal surface, asking why crime occurs, who offends, who is victimised, how society responds beyond the courtroom, and whether the systems we use to address crime are just or effective. Studied together, they offer a richer understanding of criminal justice than either provides alone. At Leeds Beckett this three-year full-time LLB combines the two into a single integrated degree. You will begin by developing your core legal knowledge, learning to interpret legislation and navigate court processes through study of criminal law, public law, contract law, and related subjects. Criminology builds on that foundation, exploring why people offend, how society responds, and the full range of issues that arise beyond the formal legal process, including policing, miscarriages of justice, and the treatment of offenders. The programme includes a sandwich year offering professional experience in a relevant setting, a year abroad for those wishing to study in an international context, and work placement opportunities throughout. Leeds Beckett's professional orientation ensures that your legal and criminological learning is consistently connected to the realities of practice. Graduates are well placed to pursue qualification as solicitors or barristers through the Legal Practice Course or Bar Practice Course. Many also move into careers in the criminal justice system, the probation service, the police, youth offending, social work, policy, and research. The combined degree is particularly valuable for roles that require both legal competence and critical understanding of how the criminal justice system operates in practice. Postgraduate study in law, criminology, or criminal justice is a natural next step.
