LLB Law
About this course
Law is one of the most intellectually rigorous and practically consequential of all the university disciplines. It trains you to think precisely about what rules mean and how they apply, to construct arguments from evidence, to engage with the complexity of competing interests and values, and to communicate your reasoning in ways that are clear, structured and persuasive. These skills are foundational to legal practice, but they are also enormously valuable across a wide range of careers in which the ability to analyse problems carefully and express yourself well makes a real difference. At Surrey, this three-year full-time programme develops expertise in legal analysis, problem-solving and communication on top of a strong foundation in substantive legal knowledge. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, public law, criminal law, equity and land law, and you will engage with the skills of legal reasoning through moot exercises, problem questions and research tasks. The programme is taught within a law school with strong connections to a range of employers, and the skills it develops are valued by law firms, corporate organisations, government departments and a wide range of professional services. You will graduate with the intellectual foundations to pursue further professional legal training as a solicitor or barrister, and with transferable skills in analysis, research and communication that open doors well beyond the legal profession. Graduates of Surrey's law programme go on to training contracts and pupillages in the legal profession, as well as roles in financial services, consulting, the public sector, journalism and graduate management programmes. Postgraduate study in law, including the LLM, is a natural option for those who want to specialise.
