LLB Law
About this course
Law at degree level is both an intellectual formation and a practical preparation. The discipline examines the rules and principles that govern how societies organise themselves and how disputes are resolved, developing in students the ability to read complex material with precision, construct and evaluate arguments, and communicate conclusions with clarity and persuasion. These capacities are central to legal practice and are also valued across a broad range of other careers where analytical rigour and clear communication are important. A qualifying law degree is the foundational academic qualification for those who wish to enter the legal profession in England and Wales. At Royal Holloway you will study law over three years of full-time study, on an LLB that is highly regarded by employers and designed to provide a strong foundation for a wide variety of career paths. You will develop both doctrinal legal knowledge across the core subjects of a qualifying law degree and the legal reasoning skills that allow you to apply that knowledge to new problems. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with substantial professional and international experience, and work placement is integrated into the structure, connecting your academic learning to legal practice. The typical tariff of 136 reflects the intellectual standards expected at Royal Holloway, a research-active institution in the University of London family. Graduates who wish to qualify as solicitors or barristers progress to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar qualification after the LLB. Many Royal Holloway law graduates enter commercial law, the bar, criminal practice and public interest law. Others apply their legal training in management, compliance, financial services, the civil service, human resources, journalism or international roles. The sandwich year and year abroad are particularly valuable for students aiming at international law careers or competitive global graduate schemes. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in law, legal practice, international law or a range of social science fields.
