LLB Law
About this course
Law is the framework through which societies resolve disputes, protect individuals and regulate the exercise of power. A law degree is both a preparation for legal practice and one of the most rigorous intellectual trainings available in higher education, developing close reading of complex texts, precise argumentation, critical evaluation of evidence and the ability to apply general rules to specific facts. These are capabilities that are valuable in legal practice and across a very wide range of other professional contexts. At Bangor University, the LLB programme provides a thorough grounding in the principles and institutions of English and Welsh law, covering the foundations that a qualifying degree requires: contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and land law. You will develop legal reasoning through case analysis, statutory interpretation and academic legal writing, building the skills that professional training and practice demand. The programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, offering an unusually wide range of opportunities to develop professional experience and international perspectives across the full duration of the degree. Bangor is a university in Wales, which gives the degree a distinctive context. You will gain awareness of Welsh devolution and the Welsh legal jurisdiction, including the ways in which the National Assembly has developed distinct Welsh law in areas such as education and health. This bilingual legal context is an interesting and increasingly relevant dimension of the study of UK law. The LLB is a qualifying law degree, keeping open the route into practice as a solicitor or barrister. Graduates also work in the civil service, financial services, compliance, business, policy, the third sector and international organisations. Postgraduate study in law, including the Legal Practice Course or similar professional training, is the usual next step for those entering the profession.
